Yellowstone National Park

Welcome to Yellowstone National Park! There’s so much to do here, but we’re going to focus on the geographic features and natural history. Let’s take a look at the most iconic features of this park.

Yellowstone national park was established in 1872 by Ulysses S. Grant and is one of the oldest national parks in the United States. It was created to protect both wildlife and geothermal features. It also has a history of human impact on its ecology.

The establishment of Yellowstone as a national park came from efforts by John Wesley Powell and Ferdinand Hayden. They had plans to explore the area, as well as lobbying by sportsmen’s associations. These groups saw their vision for preserving this land and were concerned about the declining numbers of game animals. President Grant signed legislation establishing it on March 1st, 1872 as America’s first national park (a designation later used for other protected areas).

Grand Prismatic Spring

The Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, measuring 370 feet in diameter. It is the third largest hot spring in the world, this enormous pool of water is not only impressive in size but also its rainbow-like colors. This superheated spring is named for its prism-like appearance caused by colored bacteria thriving within the different temperatures of water surrounding it; some sections appear to be turquoise blue while others are green or orange.

The coloration comes from thermophilic cyanobacteria that thrive here due to high levels of thermal energy provided by nearby geysers and boiling springs like those found at this site—it can reach temperatures as high as 160°F (70°C).
